Let me address some of the things on the table right now. I sent an e-mail to Margit Dementi informing her about our plans for Winter and Spring, and of our intention to apply for additonal funds in the november funding round. A brief letter of intent is due on 10/4--hopefully this will suffice. The deadline for draft proposals is (I believe) 10/14. As far as the next proposal goes, we'll also need letters of recommendation--I suppose that Chandan and Alys are the people to ask...? In my e-mail to Margit I also inquired about changing the name on promotional materials to Transnational Studies Project. We'll see... I was also alarmed by the fact that the Simpson Center homepage has Lowe's 1/30 talk listed under Shawn Wong Asian American Culture(s) Critique series--how this happened, I'm really not sure, but I'm not exactly happy about it. As far as funding goes, Rahul and I have started contacting some of the additional sources: Geography, History, Ethnic Studies, Curriculum blah blah project, and the English Department visiting lecturers committee. Anyone who'd like to join in these efforts is welcome but I figured since the rest of you are working on the grant proposal, we would handle this. But if you think you have the time for raising additional funds, your help would be welcome. I sensed from talking to a few of you that there are concerns over the workload for the upcoming year. I've proposed that we could add another person if we all think it necessary. Brian Zindel has expressed interest in helping us out so we could add him to the mix if you all think it would be a good idea. I've already talked to Rahul and Jeff about this possibility and they seemed up for it. I have to admit that with my exams looming in January I won't be able to give as much energy to this project as I have in the past year--at least not as far as this quarter is concerned. I anticipated this last year and had mentioned the possibility of Rahul co-chairing the project with me this year. I know how much we all like to talk about titles...In any case, Rahul is willing and it would be a huge help to me to have him working in that capacity. I know that others have similar concerns about time and the workload this coming year but I hope we'll all be able to work together and pick up the slack for each other when needed. Be honest--if you're feeling overwhelmed, someone else will do the work. This project isn't about tabulating who does what and we should be enjoying the fact that we have Lisa Lowe coming. If this message is a bit rambling, I apologize. I've been up since 4:45 this morning when my upstairs neighbors started blasting conjunto music. For the first time in my life I actually called the cops on someone...Anyway, I hope all of you have a wonderful beginning to your quarter and that the first week goes smoothly. Warm regards--Todd _______________________________________________________________________________ Todd F. I hadn't been checking my email at all which, although related to some issues of personal exhaustion, is really a poor excuse for lack of participation. So thanks to you all for working on the details of paperwork and publicity, and please excuse my absence. > > Kellie, thanks for handling this student organization stuff. I will sign the paperwork and leave a copy of my card, etc. in your box tomorrow (Monday). I hope that's not too late. I will also read through the constitution, which I'm sure is fine. Also, shall we get together to talk about the reading selections during this first week? Jeff, perhaps we can meld that meeting with a discussion of the next grant proposal? > > As far is the name is concerned, I realize this comment is a little late, but I also think we should stick with Transnational Studies Project. I believe we discussed the name at our last meeting and decided that "project" implied an ongoing, active endeavor. It's also a bit less cumbersome than some of the other options that have come up, and more inclusive as well. I don't think it's a problem if some of the publicity has a slightly different name, but we should probably stick with the original choice from now on (to avoid confusion with faculty contacts, etc.).> > Rahul, that's excellent that you've secured some more support and funding for the project--very good news. Todd, now that we have a date for Lisa Lowe, shall we all reconnect with our faculty contacts regarding funding? > > Thanks again everyone for your hard work and patience. > > See you next week! > Lesley > > -- > Lesley Larkin > Teaching Assistant > Department of English Box 354330 > University of Washington > Seattle, WA 98195-4330 > 206-685-1845 > > > > > > > > > On Fri, 27 Sep 2002, Rahul Gairola wrote: > > > good news! > > > > > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > Rahul Krishna Gairola > > Department of English Office: Padelford B25C > > University of Washington Hours: T, Th 2:30-4pm > > Seattle, WA 98195-4330/ USA Phone: (206) 685-8960 > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > > > > > > > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > > Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 10:36:11 -0700 > > From: Betty Schmitz > > To: Rahul Gairola > > Subject: Re: Transnational Studies Project > > > > Dear Rahul Gairola, what a wonderful project you have put together!
