I have a student, enrolled last year in a full-time status, and currently 19 years old. Her parent didn't claim her as a tax exemption, but did list her name under the "head of household" status. The student filed her own tax forms, using her Washington address and claimed herself. Last year, while a student, she did not work because she had social security survivors benefits that supported her as well as 22,000 in financial aid - alternative and stafford loans equalling 15,000. In lieu of work, she has volunteered extensively throughout the community including our local chapter of the Sierra Club, Thurston County Chapter of Young Democrats, as well as two other community-based organizations in Olympia. All of her documentation is a year old - driver's license and voter registration. How would you review the "head of household" claim by the parent? Does her signficant volunteer work overcome her presumption that she is here for educational purposes. I look forward to your advice! Andrea Coker-Anderson Registrar The Evergreen State College .
