"Repugnican?"  Nice word.

John Leo was involved in the fray over Kamuf's speech about reading aloud to
children, already discussed here.  The chronicle of Higher Education account,
"Pundits Accuse Literature Scholar at Southern Cal of Attacking Parents Who
Read to Their Children," 2/2/01, is fairly hilarious, involving a bunch of
people who commented on each other without reading their work: Leo was one of
these, denouncing Kamuf in US News,  though in his defense it can be argued
that he requested a copy and was refused.  Amy Halloran, who first brought the
topic up in an article for Salon, is quoted by the Chronicle as follows: "I
feel very badly it's all gone so awry," she says, speaking from her home while
her 2-year-old, to whom she says she reads daily, chatters in the background.
"I guess it didn't occur to me to check it.... I'm a fiction writer,
mostly."     I think Kamuf's site was previously posted but here it is again:
