It is a rerun of Do Mi Stauber's Seattle workshop called "Facing the Text." Can you please disseminate the following as soon as is convenient? (I presume you have an electrified mailing list, as we have, so if you can send the word out via e-mail, great! If not, please e-mail me a list of snail mail addresses and I'll mail out some hard copy. **************************************************************** ASI-SoCal invites you to Santa Barbara on July 25, 1998. The Southern California chapter is sponsoring a special workshop for those indexers who are interested in honing their skills on scholarly texts. The all-day workshop will be presented by Do Mi Stauber, who is traveling to Santa Barbara for the occasion. The workshop will be a repeat of her very popular one to be given in Seattle. Ours will will be held on Saturday, July 25th, and will be perfect as a "make-up" session for those who are not planning to go to Seattle, or who are unable to squeeze Do Mi's workshop into their schedules while there. This participatory workshop focuses on the practical processes of indexing. We will survey the steps that indexers follow as we interpret texts and create index structures, using examples and hands-on exercises from a range of real texts and indexes. This workshop covers back-of-book indexing of both scholarly books and textbooks in the social sciences and humanities. It is not a basic introduction to indexing, but novices as well as experienced indexers should benefit. Among subjects to be discussed are: main topics, indexable topics, index structure, subheads, cross references, and wording. The schedule for the day is as follows: 9:00 to 9:30 for registration, continental breakfast, and get-acquainted time (we chose a late starting time to allow extra time to those who are driving in that morning) 9:30 to 1:00 (or so) class (with one break at a convenient stopping place, when beverages will be served) 1:00 to 2:00 lunch (included in registration fee) 2:00 to 5:15 (or so) class (with one break at a convenient stopping place, when beverages will be served) We have yet to select a venue for this event, but hope to have all arrangements made soon. We will select a meeting place at a hotel or near several motels so that all budgetary concerns can be accommodated. The price of the conference has yet to be determined, because it will depend on the final selection of the place (cost of lunch, etc.) but we are planning on providing a very reasonably priced workshop for you. We will merely cover our costs; i.e., this will not be a fundraiser for our chapter. And, ASI national is subsidizing DoMi's expenses, so we plan on the cost being lower than you would expect to pay for this excellent educational seminar. If you are interested in attending, please send an e-mail message to that effect to Anne Leach. When we've nailed down the cost numbers, she will e- mail you a registration form which you can print out and mail, with your check, to Anne. Thanks very much. We hope to see you in Santa Barbara. .
