There are two older studies in German (I don't recall whether they 
were mentioned by Browning):

Richard Foerster, "Kaiser Julian in der Dichtung alter und neuer 
Zeit," Studien zur vergleichenden Literaturgeschichte 5 (1905), p. 
1-120 (with a supplement by Robert F.  Arnold and Karl Kipka,  p. 
330-336)

Kaete Philip, Julianus Apostata in der deutschen Literatur, Berlin, 
Leipzig, 1929 (Stoff- und Motivgeschichte der deutschen Literatur, 
vol. 3).

Another guess for the work Catherine Mori mentioned: Might it be a 
translation of the story about Julian in August Strindberg's 
Historiska Miniatyrer?  (The German title is "Apostata".)
