The eighth annual stage race, which has ended in North Carolina the past few years, will head further south, concluding May 12 in Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta -- the host city of the 1996 Olympics. "It made sense to see if we could get some of the synergy of the Olympics," said executive race director Michael Plant, a former U.S. Olympic speed skater. The largest cycling event in the United States will begin May 1 in Wilmington, Delaware and go through Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia. The race will dispense with the traditional prologue start and instead begin with an 81 kilometre (50 mile) circuit race, which organisers hope will generate greater interest from the public. In addition to the circuit race start, the Tour will feature 10 road races and two individual time trials and be highlighted by four consecutive mountain races in stages five through eight. American Lance Armstrong, who won a stage of the Tour de France earlier this month, is expected to be back to defend his Tour DuPont title, although the field has not yet been announced. ^REUTER .
