Here is what I came up with... Idea #1 You may want to read up on doing a "Spatial Join" in Arc View. I'll quote from the AV manual: "when you join the attribute table of theme A into the attribute table of theme B based on their shape fields, ArcView automatically: finds which feature in theme A is nearest to each feature in theme B. Calculates the distance between these features and adds it to theme B's attribute table in a new field named Distance..." The manual goes on. I'm not sure this is what you are after. Idea #2 There is a ESRI developed script that is download-able from their web page (esri.com) This is what they say about the script: View.CalculateDistance Headline: Calculates distances from points in one theme to points in another. Description: This script will prompt you for two point themes in the active view. The first is the point theme containing the selected points that you wish to calculate the distance FROM. The second is the point theme containing points that you wish to calculate the distance TO. Idea #3 A user developed extension for AV called: Network Distance Point to Points Keywords:Find distance between one and many locations and write to table Header:This extension will find the distance between a distination point theme and theme of multiple starting points. It assumes distance units are meters and converts to miles. I also got this information from the esri web page. Because this is a user developed extension, you may want to contact the author. Author's Email:mcalisdg@sce.com I have not tried either of the last two options. I have been successful with a spatial join, but I'm pretty sure that won't do exactly what you are trying to do. You may also want to read up on Network Analyst and associated scripts for that. Don't hesitate to contact me with further questions or concerns. m.
