This is the last of the events that are taking place before we say goodbye for the summer. =20 =B7 Portland Trip =B7 Urban Studies Website =B7 Nativity House Writer =B7 2004/2005 Civitas President =20 Thank you for your support at attending and organizing this years events. This year Civitas has brought many people together and allowed students to broaden their skills. I hope that many of you will get involved with Civitas or other organizations. It is a well worth phase of our academic career. A pdf form of this email is available on the Urban Studies website= =2E =20 Portland Trip: As many of you know, the Portland trip is well on its way. Rowan, Ursula, Stan, and Christopher have worked hard in getting this event to be a well worth trip. Hope you are attending. There is a meeting on Wed, April=20 21st, at 6:45 in MAT to discuss the final car pool and hotel arrangements. This is a must attend meeting. =20 Urban Studies Website: Civitas is currently working on the website. Sarah will design and build the site, and Gloria will put the content together with feedback from students. Please email Gloria, ilseattl@u.washington.edu, with any ideas. So far some suggestions are graduate school info, extra-curricula info fro= m students, research data/info, alumni updates, etc. =20 Nativity House Writer: Jim Cook, Urban Studies Student, has been working at the Nativity House. I= t is three blocks south from the University, on Jefferson Street. They run a daytime homeless shelter providing 2 meals a day and a place to stay during the day where they are treated with dignity and provided with a haven from the street. =20 An outgrowth from the space that Nativity House creates for their guests came the 'Street Pulse' a newspaper about homelessness and poverty in Tacoma. It's an opportunity for the guests to share their experiences in the form of articles and poems. =20 They are exploring ways to distribute the paper throughout the downtown ar= ea to help bridge a gap in information about homelessness and poverty in our local area. =20 As Urban Studies students we have a unique opportunity to discuss and research these topics in our classes and our research papers. One of the biggest challenges with homelessness is the wide social gap that exists between the homeless and the housed. =20 Submitting an article is a way to participate in closing that gap. It's also a great way to become published in a forum that is directly related t= o your major. Articles could be about structural reasons for homelessness, information about local services, news related items about local decisions= , services, laws or events and their potential impact on the homeless and th= e poor. =20 If you're interested in writing an article but want to talk it over, or wa= nt a copy of the 'Street Pulse' to get an idea of what I'm talking about, or wish to submit an article, etc, please contact me Jim Cook at jmikelcook@yahoo.com =20 2004/2005 Civitas President: It is that time of year to find a new Civitas President. Ursula Kehaulani has expressed deep interest in this position and I believe will be a great asset. She has done a tremendous job on other UW committees as well as he= r internship with the City of Tacoma. Her resume is below that shows her credentials for this position. These contacts and experiences provide a great resource in bringing influential events to the department as well as shows her capabilities in facilitating the organization. =20 Academic Experience/UWT Experience: UW Public Relations Officer for the Asian Pacific Islander Student Unio= n, and Student Government Elections Committee Civitas Experience Planning Committee for the Portland Trip, and International Ambassador =20 Attended the Urban Field Experience in Leiden =20 Business Experience: Economic Development Department for the City of Tacoma focusing on business retention and recruitment, as well as the Urban Policy Committee which advises city council with grant fund allocations for housing and human services. =20 Officially the President is chosen through an election process. If there are other students who are interested, please feel free to contact, Gloria Ramirez, President 2003/2004, ilseattl@u.washington.edu, for information. If no other students are interested Ursula Kehaulani will assume position = on April 27th for the next academic year. =20 .
