It is a bit like the ASCE Concrete Canoe competition, but has fewer flotation requirements. The competition is run by the Prestressed Concrete Institute and requires teams of students to design, build and test a prestressed concrete beam subject to certain constraints. Points are available in seven different categories, including both strength/weight and quality of reporting. The team with the most points wins. The UW submitted two entries. They came in No 1 and 2 in the regional competition. The first placed team in each of the six regional competitions was then entered in the national competition. The UW team came first with 120 points, beating Nebraska into second place with 83. Interestingly, the UW second entry scored 105 points in the regionals, and would therefore most likely have taken second at nationals had the rules allowed them to go on. This is the first time the UW has entered the competition. The team members are: Lee Andrews Greg Banks Jason Flangas Brien Lindstrom Rez Moulla Please join in congratulating them on a very fine performance.
