As many of you already know, you, as well as non-majors, have the opportunity to join Phi Alpha Theta, affectionately known as PAT. PAT is not, just to clear up that oh-so-common initial false impression, a part of the Greek system. We are a history honors society specifically for UW students who have an interest in history and in talking intelligently (and sometimes not so intelligently, we have been known to discuss such varied topics as what would happen if Washington State broke away from the union and have deeply and philosophically debated the existence of a Darth Ball, somewhat similar to Darth Maul only spherical) about not only history, but also current events, entertainment, etc. In addition to offering a good place to talk to people with similar interests, PAT also gives you a chance to explore your options as a history major. Every year we attend as a group a regional conference, where we undergrads get the opportunity to present a paper that we have written (dont worry, not compulsory, besides, its fun!) in front of an audience of professors and of our peers from other institutions. In other words, we get to act like Grad students for a day, though many of us are headed in other directions, such as law school etc. Still, standing up and giving a paper and defending your conclusions is essential practice for any vocation. Additionally, PAT members throughout the year have the opportunity to attend various activities that the club members organize, such as barbecues, movie nights, and hopefully this year, an overnight in Smith Hall with movies and, of course, free food! If you are interested in PAT, why not attend our first meeting? Unfortunately the time and date have not yet been set, but Ill be sending you an email about that in a week or two. There will be snacks available and plenty of new people to meet, our photo album from last year will be on hand so you can get an even better idea of just what PAT is about! If you'd like any more info or have any questions, feel free to send me an email here at phialpha@u.washington.edu. Hope to see you soon, Julie Hughes PAT Pres. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Phi Alpha Theta, Delta Iota Chapter phialpha@u.washington.edu http://weber.u.washington.edu/~phialpha "History is an account, mostly false, of events, mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers, mostly knaves, and soldiers, mostly fools." -Ambrose Bierce ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ .
