Subject:  Request for Information / Research Leads

I work for the City of Boulder Mountain Parks Division as a natural
resource planner / environmental education coordinator.  The Boulder
Mountain Parks system is a collection of large and small natural areas
(totally about 6,500 acres), which offers diverse ecosystems,
high-quality habitat, and incredible biodiversity.  Mountain Parks also is
heavily affected by recreational use and other external factors, given its
location in a large metropolitan area and the 1.5 million visitors it gets
annually.

We are currently initiating a planning process to develop a Mountain
Parks Management Plan for Resource Protection and Visitor Use.  Our
planning goals are to expand the scope of Mountain Parks' natural,
cultural, and recreational resource management activities and expand the
on-going involvement of the Parks' constituencies in these activities.  This
plan will enable a more proactive approach to resource management and
implementation of a zone management system.  The intent of this
management approach is to balance resource protection and visitor use
by designing management strategies geared to the specific ecological
sensitivities and other characteristics of different areas in the Parks
(which have varying needs for protection and varying opportunities for
appropriate recreational uses).

I am requesting assistance in identifying the following information, which
would greatly aid our planning effort:

1) Research bibliographies and references to articles and books that
deal with the ecological impacts of recreational use and with strategies
to deal with them.

2) Techniques for managing visitor use and associated impacts.

3) Exemplary examples of resource / land management plans, especially
those aimed at managing high levels of recreational use and those
dealing with some variation of zone management.

I would appreciate any leads whatsoever.  Thanks for your help.
