To: ph-assess@u.washington.edu Subject: Youth Risk Behavior Surveys X-mailer: Connect2-SMTP 4.00 MHS to SMTP Gateway As many of you know there was recently a letter sent out regarding a Youth Risk Survey which will be conducted this Spring. I got some questions about it so I thought I would let everyone know what I know about it. The following informaiton is from Judy Schoder regarding the different surveys and when they are planned for. I hope this is helpful: Youth Risk Surveys OSPI is collaborating with the Division of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA) to administer a survey in March 1998. The survey content is focused predominately on drug and alcohol use and risk and protective factors with a few items pertaining to demographic info and school safety issues. They are using the community, individual, and school domains for the risk and protective items. In an attempt to minimize any controversy, there will not be any questions about sexual behaviors or family issues. The sample will include 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. OSPI has a contract with RMC Research to administer the survey-which includes the sample schools as well as "piggybacks." The survey the DOH is planning to conduct will take place in spring of 1999. While we have not made any final decisions at this time, we are hoping to have a more comprehensive survey-similar to the CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey instrument. As you may recall, the YRBS includes questions related to nutrition, physical activity, safety/injury prevention, suicide, sexual activity and tobacco, drug and alcohol use (if the 1998 OSPI-DASA survey is successful we could use their data and delete the drug/tobacco items.) The YRBS samples 9-12th grade and uses a very different sample methodology from the one RMC is using for the 1998 drug and alcohol survey. We are in the very beginning stages of planning and hope to get more input at the regional mtgs. you've scheduled for us to attend next month. Please feel free to pass this info on as you deem appropriate. The more you can do to help us decrease the confusion is greatly appreciated. THX!!! Let me know if you have any other questions. Judy and Lillian Bensley will be attending the January regional meetings to talk about the upcoming DOH survey and see what your thoughts are so please try to attend. If you cannot and would like to give input please call or e-mail me or Judy.
