Thanks to Patrick, Meredith and David for their interesting
and nostalgic responses. I won't go into my own computer
memories going back to the sixties (when I was working
in the systems department of a bank -- really big and
advanced machines for that period, but nothing to do with
word-processing), nor into my own experiences with (mostly
well groomed, however) computer sales staff.

Let me just indicate, though, the reason that I asked in the
first place: I happened yesterday to be perusing a publication
from 1984, from an eminent academic publisher, on Greek
cultural history of the 8th-7th cent. B.C., and noticed that
whereas the author had included a short section entitled
"Ekstatische Mantik" (and the word is spelled properly elsewhere
in the text, as well as in the index), in the table of contents
there appears "Ekstatische Mathematik". I had some trouble
believing that this was a fully conscious alteration on anyone's
part. That a spelling-checker would have suggested the one
word for the other much less common one is also not such an
easy assumption, but not totally unrealistic, I thought.
