Bush, HRC Asserts WASHINGTON - The Human Rights Campaign will join leaders of several progressive national organizations on a tour of major cities in key electoral battleground states this week to appeal to Ralph Nader supporters to consider how voting for Nader might have the unintended consequence of electing George W. Bush as president. "If George W. Bush is elected," said Elizabeth Birch, executive director, Human Rights Campaign, who will represent the organization on the tour. "We will endure grave setbacks and it will dash even the most modest of dreams of Nader and Gore supporters alike." A weeklong five-city tour begins today with concerts in Washington and Oregon featuring singer and songwriter Melissa Etheridge. Rallies on Tuesday in Wisconsin and Minnesota, and Wednesday in New Mexico will feature songwriter and singer Stephen Stills, veteran of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. In addition to Birch, at these events, the artists will be joined by Robert Cox, board president, Sierra Club; Alice Germond, vice president, National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL); and Maureen Brittel, executive director, Voters for Choice. On Tuesday in Madison, Wisc., feminist and author Gloria Steinem will join the group. At each state, the group will also be joined by local representatives, including Green Party supporters who, given the stakes and tightness of the race, will also urge audiences to vote for Al. Gore. "The winner of the next election may appoint up to three Supreme Court justices," said Birch. "If Nader's candidacy causes Bush to win, Bush's conservative Supreme Court appointees could put a woman's right to choose, the environment and the prospect of gay and lesbian equality in jeopardy." The Democratic National committee is funding the tour and events in each state are being sponsored by that state's Democratic Party. The Human Rights Campaign is the nation's largest national lesbian and gay political organization with members throughout the country. HRC effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to ensure that lesbian and gay Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community. - 30 - .
