We are now experimenting with allowing these streams to be viewed from anywhere on the Internet with a high speed connection, UWNetID credentials), and a modern copy of the (free) QuickTime Player. We are more confident that the videos will stream properly within the LLC's switched Gigabit network, and don't know exactly what constitutes 'high speed' for outside use, however the current bitrate of the videos has seen some success on a somewhat older G3 Macintosh through a 11Mbps (max) wireless connection, then through a router, through a attbi cable modem, and back to the LLC. Even with fast networks, changing traffic loads can cause network slowdowns, and the LLC cannot guarantee that streams outside the LLC will be trouble-free (nor troubleshoot that situation), and it does not have control over what speed computer, or what software is loaded on non-LLC computers. That said, feel free to try out the streams off: ... and you're welcome to let me know (directly) if that works for you. Be sure to set your QuickTime Player network speed appropriate for your network speed; if set too low for your connection, you can artificially choke down movie playback speed and cause playback problems. Also keep in mind that the broadcasts we receive digitally through satellites, sometimes pause, roll, and have other quality problems beyond the LLC's control. Since all network traffic going into and out of the LLC goes through a single wire, including but not limited to streaming audio, file service, web traffic (from the 100 lab machines, WebCT, and LLC staff), and now streaming video, the LLC will keep an eye on things to make sure the streaming video doesn't bring the network to its knees. thanks Bob Majors Language Learning Center .
