The Gay American Smoke Out is coming up on November 16. Quit smoking or help a friend quit on that day! If you don't know - the Gay American Smoke Out is our version of the American Cancer Society's Great American Smoke Out. The Great American Smoke Out is in it's 20 somethingth year at the American Cancer Society. Four years ago we approached the American Cancer Society in Seattle to ask if we could change the word "Great" to "Gay" - amazingly they said yes. Our first year of outreach was low key - but very well received. This year during the 4th Annual Gay American Smoke Out we are expanding our outreach efforts to help the GLBT community quit smoking. We will offer free "GLBT Quit Kits' to individuals who want to quit smoking. FREE QUIT KITS will be available at the following locations: November 11 12 noon - 5 p.m. at IKEA November 11 7 p.m. - 10 p.m. at the Wild Rose November 15 12 noon - 7 p.m. at the Broadway Market November 16 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the Pink Zone The Gay American Smoke Out is sponsored by the King County Tobacco Council for Sexual Minorities. The Tobacco Council includes Stonewall Recovery Services, Gay City, The Seattle Lesbian Cancer Project, The American Cancer Society and Public Health. INTERESTING INFORMATION Gay and bisexual men smoke at a rate of 48%. Straight men smoke at 28%. The smoking rate of gay and bisexual men is higher than any other minority group! The gay and bisexual mens smoking study was conducted in Tucson AZ and Portland OR in 1998 and published in 1999. It is one of the only credible studys on the smoking rates of gay and bisexual men. Guess what? We do not know the smoking rates of lesbians as there are not any credible studys involving lesbian, bisexual or transgender individuals. (Elise Lindborg plans to change this!) .
