Employers project making nearly one-fifth of their job offers (19%) to new college graduates. More than 60% of employers say they will increase college hiring. Half of those projecting an increase cited obvious reasons - business growth and demand for products and services are triggering this "hiring frenzy." Others reported that Y2K concerns kept hiring down last year. Nearly one-third of employers responding to the "Job Outlook 2001 Survey" say they plan to maintain hiring at last year's already high levels. Only 5% reported cutting back due to restructuring, mergers, and acquisitions. Among those employers hiring new grads, on-campus recruiting is viewed as the most effective recruiting method. Employer recruiters show a strong preference for any method that provides them with a "personal relationship with potential hires; consequently, internship programs, employee referrals, career/job fairs, and faculty contacts" are important. 'Net recruiting has been added to employer recruting programs, however, while this method can help organizations identify a large number of potential candidates, it can't provide the personal contact that recruiters say is most important. Internet recruiting therefore still falls behind traditional methods that give recruiters face-to-face contact with potential hires.
