As many of you already know, the Huskies of the University of Washington are the new NCCA National Collegiate Track Cycling Champions. The Huskies edged out Stanford University, 669 to 663, to win the team omnium competition -- the most coveted title of the event. In addition to the team overall, the Huskies took home a number of event and individual omnium medals: Gold: Women's Match Sprints Women's 500m Time Trial Women's Team Pursuit Women's Olympic Sprints Italian Pursuit Silver: Women's Individual Pursuit Women's Individual Omnium Bronze: Women's Match Sprints Women's Points Race Men's Points Race Women's Individual Omnium The addition of woman superpowers Laura and Jennie Reed clearly helped the team improve on last year's Bronze medal in the team omnium; however, the narrowness of the margin of victory accentuates the fact that this was a team effort. There was not a single rider on the team without whom, and without whose points, we could have won this thing. With a healthy team (Scott -- we missed you out there!) and a little more coordination earlier in the season, the Huskies are already well-poised to defend their title next year. Many people were instrumental to the team effort, and we would like to take the opportunity to thank these people now: Firstly, thanks to Scott Chegwidden for putting this whole crazy event together; it was a mammoth task to coordinate everything, satisfy logistical and bureaucratic requirements, and deploy everyone effectively during the actual event. Due to a freshly fractured clavicle, Scott didn't even get the chance to bow out of the promotional madness and ride his bike when the time came -- this only adds to our appreciation for his efforts. Asking Scott whether he planned to bid for next year's event only evoked a laugh; I guess we are going to Indy or Colorado Springs next year. Scott has been the backbone of the Husky track team from its inception last year, so we would like to thank him for his patience, persistence, and enthusiasm in turning us on to this sport. Thanks to the entire Marymoor Velodrome Association for undertaking this project andbearing the financial risk; the entire board of the MVA, and particularly Jerry Baker, were invaluable in helping to pull this off. Thanks also to all those who were instrumental in helping Scott, and who were at the track nearly 24 hrs a day making sure everything worked out: Paul Johnson (Scott's Field Marshal), Jenny Wong, Emerson Tongco (King of Logistics), Mary-Kelly "The Taxi" Persyn, and Eric Soroos (Results Master). The Husky Team itself would like to thank everyone who coached them, advised them, and otherwise prepared them for the event and held their hands throughout: Most notably, thanks to "the Phlegmatic" Greg Lipski for mechanical, moral, and adhesive support; to John Hansen, voice of wisdom, who donated three full days of his time on the infield to making sure we remembered to breathe and think during our rides, and eat after them; to Terry Buchanan and Ken Hillyer for revealing strategic secrets and for bearing with the early versions of our team pursuit exchanges. We would also like to thank our sponsors, both of the event and of the Husky team. Racing is expensive, and we appreciate the material and financial supoprt that you have provided: Stella's Trattoria and Mitchelli Family Restaurants Banana Boy Bicycles Great Harvest Bread Company Big Time Pizza QFC Alasika Spring Water Coca-Cola Co. PowerBar Profile Specialized (helmets and tires) Finally, thanks a lot to all who came out to watch (and to those who have read through this whole email message!). We are very excited about the outcome of the 1996 Collegiate Track Championships, and look forward to more great racing at Marymoor and on the road next season.
