SEA-SPAN is an evolving network of people from diverse backgrounds who are motivated to improve the links and understanding between policy and scientific communities. Our focus is on improving the capabilities of the peoples of Southeast Asia to cope with the challenges of living with global environmental change. SEA-SPAN is one of the activities of the Impacts Centre for Southeast Asia (IC-SEA) which is based in Bogor, Indonesia. The SEA-SPAN network has been supported by an electronic news and discussion list SEA-SPAN-L since May 1997. To date more than 450 messages have been posted, primarily news items, but also commentaries and position statements. Over the past few months we have averaged around 10 individual postings per week. There is an option to have posted messages sent to subscribers in digest form once a day. The range of topics is broad encompassing most aspects of global and regional environmental change of relevance to the Southeast Asia region with a special emphasis on those of relevance to the public policy process. Thus, common areas covered include: - drivers of environmental change, including economic, social, political changes, and the key processes such as industrialisation and urbanisation - climate variability, ENSO, the Asian Monsoon, and climate change - impacts on ecological systems from both human and biophysical perspectives, for example, agriculture and food security, human health, water resources, coastal zone resources - challenges/problems of integrating conservation of biodiversity into development strategies - transboundary pollution and resource degradation problems, such as haze from fires - role of global and regional international governance in environmental protection, with focus, on environmental agreements, trade and investment Postings are in the form of newspaper items, conference announcements, research/article/book abstracts, notices about new web-sites and research programs, as well as occassional commentaries from SEA-SPAN members and so on. All postings are archived under thematic headings and the entire set of messages is searchable. To get an accurate picture of the scope of the list it is worthwhile visiting the SEA-SPAN archives at: http://www.icsea.or.id/sea-span/Sparchve.htm If you are interested in joining then please send a request with some short biographic details to either Mr. Mario Manzano or Louis Lebel : m.manzano@icsea.or.id llouis@praduu2.wu.ac.th Alternatively you can apply for membership through the SEA-SPAN home page at the URL: http://www.icsea.or.id/sea-span/ Here you can also find out more about the networks Science-Policy activity on "Land use planning and management to reduce the impacts of transboundary pollution from fires in Southeast Asia". For further information on the Impacts Centre for Southeast Asia please visit our home page: http://www.icsea.or.id/ Finally, if you have any friends or colleagues whom you think might be interested in the activities of SEA-SPAN or the discussion list then please forward this message to them.
