As you will recall, the meeting was intended to focus on the planning of a spring conference on the role of higher education in the health and well-being of children and youth. This conference is being planned in collaboration with Community-Campus Partnerships for Health and the National Committee on Partnerships for Children's Health. Meeting partipants included Jack Hilovsky from the NW Center for Public Health Practice, Joan Kelday from the Area Health Education Center program, Guillermo Carvajal from the Seattle Urban Health Alliance, Floyd Brown from the Graduate School of Public Affairs and Katharine Sanders from the Washington Health Foundation, in addition to myself. Early on in the course of the meeting, the following observations became apparent (some of these have been raised during prior meetings, but seemed more urgent this time): (1) although we have been meeting monthly, the specific individuals who attend tend to be quite different each month and we tend to spend significant time just introducing each other. This isn't necessarily a bad thing -- it seems to have led to some productive relationships -- but it does perpetuate the sense that we are not really moving ahead and going somewhere as a group. (2) although the conference is a good idea and is a tangible project for us to work on together, it should not be viewed as the "be all and end all" of our group. It should support and strengthen our overall goals and objectives, which of course have yet to be specifically defined. (3) we got off to a good start in May, when many of us met to discuss the university's role in the urban community and to consider applying for a HUD grant. We need to move forward to develop a thoughful strategic plan for the group and to enlarge the group of people involved to more fully include individuals from the community, other sectors of the university, and perhaps from other academic institutions if that is the direction we wish to take. The action steps that came out of our discussion were the following: (1) Floyd Brown and I agreed to work together to draft an initial statement of purpose for the Community-Campus Partnerships Group and to develop a workplan and timeline for developing a strategic plan for the group. We hope to get this to you in the next week or so. (2) We agreed to move ahead in planning the conference as a specific project. I will follow-up with you later this week with an email about forming the actual conference planning committee so we can fully move ahead as we had intended to do at this meeting! As the CCP strategic plan is developed, it should feed into the conference planning committee so that opportunities for furthering our overall goals and objectives might be possible through the conference. What do you think of this plan? I am excited about the energy and enthusiasm expressed for developing a strategic plan and action agenda for the Community-Campus Partnerships Group. Up until now, we have been a loose network of individuals who are interested in sharing information about our programs and exploring opportunities to work together. We have the potential to be a collective force for change in our communities and within the university and a "learning community" on community-campus partnerships.
