This is not a classics question, but I strongly suspect that there are people on the list who can answer it. Someone here recently posted a phony classified ad in our local newspaper identifying me as having a truck for sale and giving the number of the Dean of Arts' office as a place to leave messages asking for me; as a result, their voice-mail was completely blocked with calls Monday morning from people wanting to buy my non-existent truck. I've subsequently learned that the ad was e-mailed from a yahoo.com address that used my initials and surname as the first part of the address -- obviously to make it look as though I had sent it myself. Does anyone know about the laws that govern such situations? For example, I would expect that whoever created the yahoo.com address must have identified him/herself as me when establishing the account: how do I go about verifying this? Is this a special address at the yahoo site where I can find out? I may soon have the name of the person who paid for the ad, which might be of some help in my investigation.
