I'm not sure if you are looking for a proxy server or a ip masq machine,
either way I would look into picofreebsd.  It runs off a floppy and as
long as its a 486 or so, you should be ok.  Here is a link you might want

Sorry for talking about freebsd instead of linux, but I have found freebsd
to have one of the best firewall setups around, I espically like the
option to have the transparent bridge/firewall, which I currently have
setup.
