The article can be viewed on-line at: http://search.nytimes.com/search/daily/bin/fastweb?getdoc+site+iib-site+87+0 ++%28supertrawler%29%20OR%20%28%29%20OR%20%28%29 It is about attempts to bring factory trawlers back into New England fisheries and the move underway in the U.S. Congress to ban such huge fishing vessels from U.S. Northwest Atlantic waters. The power in the world's fisheries that is forcing coastal indigenous fishing cultures into extinction (and fish stocks too) is BIG business. Multi-national fishing companies and their factory trawlers can wipe out populations of fish and move to different continents without taking responsibility while local coastal fishing communities are left with depleted resources. Global competition by large factory trawlers forces smaller fishing vessels to fish harder in order to survive economically. It is time for a world-wide ban of factory trawlers to be introduced in the United Nations General Assembly. David Bergeron, Coordinator Massachusetts Fishermen's Partnership .
