Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Today, Wednesday, February 1, around 12:15pm, in spite of unusually heavy Seattle rains, the ASUW managed to pull off an on-campus rally against the proposed budget cuts. Several hundred students attended. The MC was the President of the Associated students of the University of Washington, Phil N. (sorry, I always forget his last name and have not been able to find it in my recent e-mail files.) From the cover of umbrellas, speakers from Speech Communications, Applied Math, the Institute of Environmental Studies, the School of Communications, and the Slavic Languages and Literature programs spoke about the need for Olympia, WA (the capital of the state) to put greater priority into education. The press coverage was moderate, probably due to the rain. Newspaper reporters, according to purely anecdotal sources, took their time speaking with the general student body. The best costume award (and Best Spirit) goes to the Fiber Arts program, who had Betsy Ross standing through the entire storm carrying a flag that read :"Betsy Ross was a fiber artist." Dressed in period costume and without umbrella, the person representing Betsy Ross showed that Fiber Arts is not being as quiet as some campus sources would have us believe. The crowd participated with ocassional lustful cheering in favor of education and in opposition to Olympia's lack of vision. The speaker for Slavic languages and literature was the only one to hint at any administration involvement in this matter. Phil N. closed the rally by encouraging students to join ASUW during their Tuesday visits to Olympia and overwhelm the legislators by their presence. At the end of the rally, the crowd quickly dispersed in search of dryer and warmer environments. This was the largest turn-out at any student rally I have seen in my two years here. .
