Target Audience Ideal for individuals who have had three years of college-level Russian and one year of overseas experience. Anyone in international business, including attorneys, account executives, project engineers, market development specialists, corporate executives and their assistants, can benefit from this program. How the Program Works - Classes meet 2 evenings per week on the UW campus in Seattle for a 9-week period during Autumn, Winter and Spring Quarters. - Students who successfully complete the program earn 10.8 Continuing Education Units. The program is not offered for academic credit. - Class size is limited to 18, to allow frequent interactions between students and the instructor. - Participants advance from one quarter to the next using progressively more advanced materials and complex situations. Textbooks on business language and vocabulary building may be required. - Speaking, listening and reading comprehension skills are emphasized more than writing for in-class activities. Writing exercises make up home assignments. - Reading and listening comprehension materials are selected from current news articles, films, and videotaped TV programs, or presented directly by guest speakers. Each activity is accompanied by a set of preview materials and post-viewing exercises and discussions. - Participants have access to the resources of the University of Washington libraries. What Students Learn - Speak and interact at office and business-related functions; - Answer the telephone, take messages, make appointments, and respond to business inquiries on the phone; - Participate in semi-formal dialogue and short discussions of a non-technical nature, including job interviews and simple negotiations; - Deliver short formal presentations on topics of students' interest; - Follow the overall gist of a radio or TV news presentation on business-related topics; - Review simple business documents such as invoices, shipping documents, customs paperwork, purchase orders, bank statements, and brochures; - Read business-related newspaper articles using a dictionary and with a full and accurate understanding of the language; - Write basic business letters (inquiries, responses, resumes) and short summary reports; - Access professional language tools and resources to build business and professional terminology. .
