Nineteen Hundred and Ninety-nine has arrived, and the era of countless revolutions approaches. The fires of change are just now being kindled, the seeds of hope being sown in a world that is both ripe and unprepared and the same time. We are the future. We are the elite, those who will go out into this world and set the standards for generations to come. The make up of the next one hundred years, and maybe even the next thousand, will be determined by us. Thus we are faced with a question. Will we allow indifference, apathy, ignorance, and all the plagues that sicken our world and society to haunt the lives of our children as well as ourselves. Do we wish our new millinium to be simply more of the same...hate, death, and violence facing us every night on the news and every day in our peers eyes. I propose a coalition. A coalition that would strike to the heart of this ragged world and blaze through the streets of our communities. there are around 35,000 students who attend this campus. That's enough people to raise a cry that would be heard in the White House. When students in China revolted, they recieved a completely new government, and many of them dies for their struggle. I don't suggest another Tienamin Square (bad spelling, I know), but Red Square isn't too bad of a start. We have the numbers and the resources...all we need now is the leaders, those who can inspire our apathetic schoolmates to action. It only took 100 poeple to close down 520...think what 1000 could do, or even 10,000. This is not to be a temporary coalition, however, to fight a single issue or raise a single question, but rather a permanent alliance between organizations and uninvolved students to affect change on this campus and in this state. We would have simple, easy means of contacting each other, access to all of our respective resources, insurmountable finances, inscrutable leaders, and power such as this campus has never before produced. No longer would the splintered factions of our campus supprtig the same issues be in conflict. Instead, every organization would be fully aware of all campus events, all possible resources, and have overwhelming support for their own fundraising and activities. There are no disadvantages. Members would only have one more commitment per month, unless we all decided otherwise. The advantages, however, are stunningly clear and concise. Besides what I have already told you, SAN has its office by the ASUW, we founded the Ruckus magazine, the Student Voice Coalition, and created the Student Resource Center. We get things done. We have many resources ourselves, and wish to share. The advantages are quite numerous. What will you decide? If you are interested, e-mail me, Justin Saint Clair, at jsaintc@u.washington.edu. The meeting will be Thursday, January 14th. We will provide refreshments, for all of you starving colege students. I will facilitate the meeting, but much of the agenda will be set by those participating. The time is now. The fires are burning, and it is time to throw some logs on. Join us in our struggle against all that would oppress, discriminate, and deter our peers, our children, and ourselves from succeeding and creating a better world. I look forward to hearing from you.
