Eligibility At the time of entry in this competition, the student must be enrolled full-time in a baccalaureate or higher degree health professions education program in a school that is affiliated with the Federation of Associations of Schools of the Health Professions. Proposals for new projects, as well as proposals for completed or currently implemented projects are acceptable. In recognition of the health care delivery system that is moving towards an integrated, collaborative, team approach, for the first time the Secretary*s Award will encourage submission of proposals by interdisciplinary health professions students. Interdisciplinary is defined as an approach in which two or more disciplines collaborate with the goal of fostering interprofessional interactions that enhance the practice of each discipline and improve the health of the individual patient or community. Award preferences will be given to those students working together across health professions education programs. The goal of the submitted interdisciplinary projects should be to create a more effective intervention for health promotion and disease prevention by blending the skills of each professional. Projects should demonstrate a true partnership that includes shared knowledge and shared accountability. The sponsoring school or program must be located in an accredited college or university in the United States. Employees of the department, the federation, and their families are not eligible. Prizes are as follows: Single discipline award: $3500, $2500 and $1500 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Multi-discipline award: $7500, $5000 and $3000 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Deadline Students must submit their papers to their faculty advisor or the person designated by the head of their program by February 1, 1999, for review and selection. In the case of submission of an interdisciplinary project, students must submit papers to faculty advisors from each discipline for review and selection.
