Because of the multi-disciplinary and multi-perspective nature of public health, those who would influence it must have strong collaborative leadership skills. The Northwest Public Health Leadership Institute seeks to promote community health by developing a cadre of individuals in the Northwest region who are skilled and reflective leaders. The NWPHLI offers a year long experience to increase participants’ collaborative leadership skills through on-site and distance learning opportunities guided by practice-based faculty. Scholars from diverse backgrounds (e.g., government public health, community health centers, community hospitals, community-based organizations, social services agencies, justice and law enforcement agencies) work together to develop collaborative leadership skills to apply personally, in their organizations, and in their communities with a goal of creating integrated and innovative approaches to fostering healthy communities. The curriculum is organized around six content modules, including challenges to public health, reflective and visionary leadership, crisis leadership, organizational and systems leadership, collaborative leadership and community building, and developing leadership in others. Applications are being accepted for the first cohort of Institute scholars. The Institute is the product of a partnership among the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice in the School of Public Health at the University of Washington, Portland State University, and the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Additional information about the NWPHLI and application materials are available at http://healthlinks.washington.edu/nwcphp/nwphli/. The application deadline for 2003-2004 is October 31, 2002.
