The IRI mission is to enhance society's capability to understand, anticipate and manage the impacts of seasonal climate fluctuations to improve human welfare and the environment, especially in developing countries. In pursuit of this mission the IRI undertakes research designed to unravel the direct and indirect factors that lead to climate related socio-economic outcomes and thereby provide the best evidence available to inform policy and decision-making about climate related risk. Working under the supervision of the Director of Climate Impacts Research, with a team of applied social and physical scientists, the ARS will lead the development of methodologies appropriate to creating the evidence-base for the impact of climate on society by ensuring that such evidence is based on data, sampling methods, indicators and analytical tools which yield repeatable unbiased results. It is expected that the successful candidate will adapt and test a range of current statistical tools, including space-time analytical methods involving Generalized Linear Models, to solve specific problems relating the impact of climate to societal outcomes. The scientist will also assist in project design and statistical support to a range of IRI projects within regional programs in Africa, Asia and Latin America including projects concerning human and animal health, disasters, agriculture, water resources, livelihoods etc. The successful candidate would also be expected to interact with, and where appropriate develop collaborative links with, leading agencies concerned with providing the best information to policy makers in, or concerned with, developing countries. Candidates must have an applied Ph.D in statistics, biostatistics, economics, geography, engineering or other development related field and at least two years of postdoctoral experience applying statistical tools to assess socio-economic and environmental impacts in developing countries. They must have advanced statistical and numerical skills for spatial and temporal analysis (practical knowledge of geographical information systems) which, as a team player, they are happy to share with other staff members, partners, visiting scientists and students. They must be prepared to travel to project areas around the world. Excellent written and oral English communications skills and organizational habits are required. Fluency in oral and written French/Spanish would be an advantage. Columbia University benefits accompany appointments. To apply, please submit by electronic format: a letter of application including position reference number 670 03 029; a C.V. that includes email address; a statement of research interests (1 page) and career objectives (up to 3 pages); and contact information for three references to: personnel@admin.ldeo.columbia.edu, with position number 670 03 029 also in the subject line. Candidate review will start 30 November 2003. Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Employer. Minorities and Women are encouraged to apply. Madeleine Thomson PhD.
