I share the feeo feelings of the Director of HGDp wbouit aboityabout what they have doen or not. I also appreciat eth their willingness to share information and particpate t in the dabte provided it is well informed. recently on Neem issue also. similar misinformation was indulged in. While many of us belive strongly that indue advanatge of tjoird world genetic diversity shoudl not be taken bu the vetser= vesterd vested interests in third world as well as first world, we do not share the etrhivs ethics which compropmises with truth. We realize that their mau be several sides to a truth but we do noyt not think that basic facts are subject to interpretation very differently. Neem was not petented and will not be patented just as person will not be and has not been. Even a cell line shoudl not be patnted without informed consent of teh people providing information. But to assert this position, why should misinformation be neecessary at all? Science an dsenstaionlaism sensationalism donot go togther. I hope that colleagues on thsi list wil ignore typingstyping mistakes in thsi note and jon join discussion on how do we ensure that we dot do not a let some so called spokespersons og third world interests to generate a feeling that issues of interst to third world communities have to be handles only in shabby manner or irresposnible manner. It does not credit to scientiofic spirit nor to the collectiev urge of all of us on thsilist to generate discussion in as fair maner as possibel with all sides getting opp[ortunity to expres stheir views wqithout acrimont acrimony. Ihope RAFI will join the issue with Greely and let al of us know as to wehy why misinformation became an acceptabel ethical tool in its otherwos otherwise apprecaiabel work in the cause of public awareness about people's rights about their bilogical welath. wealth. thanks anil k gupta ab anilg@iimahd.ernet.in .
