To: ph-assess@u.washington.edu Subject: Basic Epi Training X-mailer: Connect2-SMTP 4.00 MHS to SMTP Gateway Hi As many of you have probably heard by now (sorry I did not send it out earlier to this list) we received a small amount of funding from the Partnership re-application to hold 3 basic epidemiology trainings for LHJs and DOH staff. I have asked that messages be posted to the Environmental Health Directors list and the Nursing Directors list to see if they have interest in this training, overwhelmingly the answer was YES. So, below is the tentative agenda for the training. Please let me know if there are other things you would like to see added (although this is a BASIC training and we do have limited time). Registration will begin in about 1.5 weeks (I am sending it out on the 12th of April). It will be on a first come first serve basis but we will be limiting departments who want to send multiple people based on space. A list of those wanting to attend but who there is not space for will be compiled and we will plan for some more trainings after June 30th. Locations: Olympia, Mt Vernon, Moses Lake Dates: May and June Cost: Free but lunch is on your own, snacks provided The content would go something like this .... (This is just an overview, we will tighten it up depending on input and logistics) 8:30am-9:00am Registration 9:00am- Basic Epi Descriptive Epidemiology (vs analytic epidemiology) Measuring the Frequency of Health Events Types of Rates Tests of Significance 10:30-10:45 Break 10:45am Basic Epi continued The Small Numbers Dilemma Other Statistics - Years of Potential Life Lost and Life Expectancy 12 noon break for Lunch (on your own) 1:15pm Non Infectious Disease Cluster Investigations 3:15-1:30pm Break 3:30pm Examples of Data Interpretation (i.e., reading statistics - what do all these numbers mean) 4:30pm Evaluation and Closing David Solet and Christy Spice will be doing the basic Epi piece and then Juliet Van Eenwyk will be doing the non-infectious disease cluster investigation piece. She is hoping EH will have hired an epidemiologist or that someone from there could attend to assist with this part. I am open to suggestions but this is what we have planned so far - thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Katryne Lukens Bull, MPH, CHES Phone: (360) 236-4063 Washington State Department of Health Fax: (360) 586-7424 Office of Planning Pager: (360) 971-0586 1112 SE Quince St. E-mail: kal0303@doh.wa.gov PO Box 47890 Olympia, Wa 98504-7890 .
