WHEN: 4:00 - 5:00 pm, November 6, 1997 WHERE: 218 Loew Hall WHO: Harold Federow, Director of the PEMM Program WHY: For information (and refreshments.) :) :) Information session is sponsored by the Women in Engineering Initiative See below for more information: __________________________________________________________________________ Are you interested in a degree in business and engineering? Read below to find out more information about the Program in Engineering and Manufacturing Management (PEMM). Starting salary for students graduating from the PEMM program (in the past three years) is approximately $62,000 as compared to a starting salary of approximately $49,000 for the MBA degree program. For students interested in a career that requires both technical and business acumen, PEMM offers a two-year concurrent degree program. At the end of the 2 year program, students receive both a MBA (Masters in Business Administration) degree and a MSE (Master of Science in Engineering) degree. ABOUT THE PROGRAM: The PEMM program was created in recognition of the management challenges that U.S. manufacturing companies face in an increasingly complex and global marketplace. PEMM, which is a joint effort of the UW's Business School and the College of Engineering, attempts to bridge the barriers that exist among managers and engineers in manufacturing organizations. The program emphasizes the integration of a firm's engineering, manufacturing, and business functions and considers a product's total life cycle - from initial design and start-up financing to finished product and effective marketing strategy. PEMM graduates (who earn both the MBA and the MSE degrees) will have the benefit of an interdisciplinary education that focuses on economic competition within the realm of technological change. Students begin the rigorous PEMM curriculum with the MBA core requirements. The core, which takes the first year to complete, integrates modules in accounting, ethics, finance, law, marketing, and operations management into three coordinated classes. In addition to the core, students attend a year-long PEMM seminar that introduces them to manufacturing research and local businesses. As part of the seminar, students tour technology companies such as Physio-Control and Intermec and listen to speakers from, for example, Boeing and the National University of Singapore. During the summer between their first and second years, PEMM students are required to complete a manufacturing internship that gives them an opportunity to apply their technical and business expertise to real-world problems. In the past, students have spent their summers at such global manufacturing firms as Boeing, Eldec, Ford, K2, Microsoft, and Quebecor. Typically, students are assigned those high-payoff projects that never quite make it to the top of a manager's "to do" list. PEMM students have built a factory database, modeled a manufacturing process, created a product cost model, and reengineered factory workloads. Whatever the company or project, PEMM students apply their cross-disciplinary skills to gain valuable, practical experience while working to solve some of the industry's supply of problems. During their second year, PEMM students take required business and engineering courses that focus on different aspects of manufacturing - operations strategy, systems analysis, NC and CAM, supply chain management, and environmental risk assessment. Students also have the opportunity to customize their education by choosing from a wide selection of business and engineering electives. Near the end of their second year, students begin work on their masters thesis, which they complete the following summer. To qualify for the PEMM program a student must meet the following qualifications: * Have completed a BS in any engineering discipline * GPA of 3.0 or better * Co-op experience preferrable * Must take GMAT (GRE not needed) .
