I tried images from redhat.cac.washington.edu, and the mandrake site.
dd did not give any errors. All it said was :
2880+0 records in
2880+0 records out
I even tried a reverse dd, and copied the disk to an file on the and
compared it to the earlier image with diff. I did not get any errors
there. I am beginning to think there may be no problem with the dd, or the
boot image because it is successfully reaching the second image and then
fails somewhere. 
I have a Mandrake distro.
