This is carried out in the following stages: (1) Inelastic peak displacement estimation for a SDOF system subject to near-fault and far-fault shaking, (2) Evaluation of 2D steel frame stability, (3) Stability enhancement of 2D steel frames using a combination of rigid and pin connections, (4) Stability enhancement of 2D steel frame using continuous columns, and (5) Investigation of vertical shaking effects on structural response. Preliminary results of this investigation include: (1) The Capacity Spectra Method (ATC-40) and Coefficient Method (FEMA356) have been calibrated and their ability to predict the peak inelastic displacements of simple structures was assessed, (2) the tendency of a frame to have large seismic displacements is limited if the subframe in each story has positive post-elastic stiffness during an earthquake, (3) stability of 2D steel frames is sometimes, but not always, enhanced by a combination of pin and rigid connections, (4) the drift concentrations of steel frames are generally decreased by the presence of continuous columns, and (5) vertical shaking effects largely depend on modeling assumptions including both mass distribution and framing connectivity. These preliminary results are used to evaluate the behavior of three types of 3D moment-resisting framing systems. The framing systems are the "separate one-way framing system", which is a typical U.S. moment-resisting frame, the "two-way framing system", which is a typical Japanese moment-resisting frame, and the "uniform one-way framing system", which is proposed in this study and uses semi-rigid connections. The results of this phase of the study indicate the following: (1) the "separate one-way framing system" typically has lower drift concentrations due to many continuous columns, (2) the "two-way framing system" may have larger drift concentrations even though having larger stiffness and strength, and (3) the "uniform one-way framing system" had similar seismic performance to the other framing systems depending on the rigidity and strength of the semi-rigid connections. Future work includes a comprehensive evaluation of the proposed design tools and the development of statistically significant conclusions based on the simulated frame response. ============================================================================== Prof. Laura Lowes, Prof. Gregory MacRae, Co-Chairs Prof. Susan H.
