I understand the dean will return on Monday to begin negotiations with the department. Surely all the information uncovered should be useful in determining possible new directions for the department. My strong recommendation, for what it's worth, is that the department think more interdisciplinarily. When a university is down-sizing it would seem the only way to retain strength. By the way, you know I was not laid-off. I was actually offered a "promotion" by the dean, who wanted to make my position in Slavic full-time. I had to make the excruciating decision to leave the field that I loved based largely on what the faculty told me were their expectations for the department. Perhaps we should be a little more optimistic? A greater concern is what the US Congress may do. Do we have any lobbyists in Washington?
