However, if you go through a proxy service for all your websurfing, the proxy folks end up knowing all the places you go to on the web. Isn't that potentially even more of a privacy concern?! "IP by itself is something like the postal system. It allows you to address a package and drop it in the system, but there's no direct link between you and the recipient." http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/I/IP.html So far as I know, the only way to hide our IP address from marketers is surfing the Web through proxy servers such as those of: http://www.anonymizer.com http://www.inetprivacy.com/a4proxy Unfortunately, to enjoy fully functional versions one has to pay for the service. So, this leads us to the fascinating issue of the PRIVACY DIVIDE http://www.thestandard.com/article/0,1902,10880,00.html Put in simple words: those who are able to pay, can surf the Web in privacy. Otherwise, ... Privacy Divide can be seen as a subset of the DIGITAL DIVIDE. The latter is a very important issue to Medical Ethics and healthcare these days http://www.ala.org/oitp/digitaldivide/what.html Franz >From: "Health Maps" >To: >Subject: RE: Etica en SIG's >Date: Fri, 8 Jun 2001 05:24:10 -0700 > >Is it sufficient to have a fire wall to prevent someone from harvesting >your >IP for geogtracking?
