After weighing the cost and service of both Fed Ex and UPS, it is clear that Fed Ex offers a better and cheaper one-stop-shop for all our needs. For instance: 1) Fed Ex gives the UW the same fixed rates as the State of Washington contract. UPS on the other hand offers a volume discount based on a moving weekly average of shipments sent by all UW departments. The rate changes each week so we're never sure how much we will be charged for a given item. Nevertheless, I rarely see an overnight letter sent UPS that is less than $10. Many are $12 and $14. Whereas FedEx overnight letters are in the $8 range. 2) UPS charges an additional "fuel surcharge" on their shipments. Per the state contract, Fed Ex does not charge any "fuel surcharge" whatsoever. Given the increasing cost of fuel, this could start making quite a difference. 3) UPS charges an additional $4 per item (ouch!) to schedule a pickup. Fed Ex does not charge to schedule a pickup. 4) UPS charges $6/week to have a regularly scheduled daily pickup at a specified time. Fed Ex does not charge for this service. 5) UPS does not ship dangerous goods. Fed Ex does ship dangerous goods. We currently have a regularly scheduled pickup with Fed Ex at 3:30pm Monday through Friday. There is also a drop box over at the Health Sciences Center near the Court Cafe that has a 4:45 pm pickup. I am working with Fed Ex to get a drop box placed outside More Hall next to the existing UPS drop box. They will match the UPS drop box 4:45 pm pickup time when the Fed Ex box is placed. ***All shipments via Fed Ex should be prepared via the online Fed Ex Ship Manager website.*** ***Please do not prepare anymore shipments with hand written shipping labels.*** The department has an active account and I have set up a number of individual user subaccounts for various staff. The staff with user subaccounts are Arla Webb, Renate Staub, Carole McCutcheon, Lorna Latal, Pam Hjelm, Emily Deutsch, Jon Geraghty, Jack Herndon, Vince Chaijaroen, Yiming Liu, Christine Fish, Shelley Meyring, Beto Zuniga, Zack McMurry and Gene Hutchinson. If you would like to get a user subaccount and be given a quick lesson on how to use the system, just let me know. It only takes about 10 minutes. Please let me know if you have any question, concerns, complaints, etc. regarding this new arrangement.
