Graduate Students" cc: suechen@u.washington.edu, Arla Webb Subject: FICA Notification - Minimum Unit Requirement Changes (fwd) Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII RE: CHANGE IN REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENTS TO BE EXCLUDED FROM SOCIAL SECURITY TAXES Due to a recent change in the tax laws, we are able to exempt from Social Security Taxes those UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS who are attending class at least half time, defined as taking 6 units instead of the previous 7 units. This will mean that some students who were previously assessed FICA taxes are now being excluded. This change was effective with the payroll paid 2/25/98. The law also changes the requirement for Graduate Students and students at the Professional Schools. For both of these categories, the minimum unit requirement were increased. GRADUATE STUDENTS will be exempt from Social Security Taxes if they are taking at least 5 units (up from 4). These changes will take place with the next school quarter (payroll paid 4/10/98). Students in these categories should consider this increased credit requirement when registering (adding or dropping) for the spring quarter. ************************************************************************ NOTE: GRADUATE STUDENTS HOLDING GRADUATE STUDENT APPOINTMENTS ARE STILL REQUIRED TO TAKE TEN (10) CREDITS PER QUARTER. ************************************************************************ -- Arla Webb/201 More Hall/Mail Box 352700/Seattle, WA 98195-2700 (206) 543-2392 or 543-2390/FAX: (206) 543-1543 .
