The latter is quite true - all environmental legislation may well be on the chopping block over the next two years (for once we may be better off if nothing gets done)! I BELIEVE, however, that the new Chairman of Environment & Public Works is likely to be Sen. John Chaffee - THE Republican Senator who values and supports (strongly) a healthy environment and a strong ESA. Chaffee was the sponser of the improved ESA bill last session (S. 921, but the number will change if it is proposed again next session). Chaffee needs and deserves all the support he can get... but even a Republican won't be able to get anything good out of the next Congress, I'm afraid! Will 'grass roots' public pressure (public education) be the only way to get it done? > >Are there any NGO's working on either issue? > > call EPIC in Garberville/Redway, Calif., re: Headwaters, at 707-923-2931. An excellent source of info on Northwest (and other) forest info is the mailing list nwfor@igc.apc.org (or nwfor@psg.com - I've had trouble subscribing and unsubscribing from this one). I think you send requests to either lserv@... or listserver@... rather than listserv@... for this one, too. ...Well, now that I've gotten I've gotten everyone thoroughly confused about nwfor (and hopefully incited others to supply more accurate information ;-) )... > for ESA: Contact the Endangered Species Coalition in Washington, DC at > National Audubon Society headquarters (I THINK their number is: The phone number printed on the business card I have in my hand for Roger Featherstone, National Grassroots Coordinator for the Coalition, is 202-547-9009 (FAX: 202-547-9022), e-mail: featherstone@igc.apc.org ^ ^ NOT: > 202-647-9009). ^ Wish all those ecosystems and species lots of luck - the struggle never ends!
