Browns draft pick admits he would be found guilty of robbery

November 19, 2001

SEATTLE (AP) -- Cleveland Browns draft pick Jeremiah Pharms entered a modified guilty plea Monday to charges he robbed a marijuana dealer last year.

Under the so-called Alford plea, the former Washington linebacker did not admit guilt but acknowledged a jury would probably convict him. He had previously pleaded innocent.

Prosecutors plan to recommend a 3 1/2 -year term when Pharms is sentenced Jan. 11.

Pharms, selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of April's draft, was released by the team in May. The Browns said they wanted him to focus on his upcoming trial.

Pharms was accused of stealing $1,500 worth of marijuana during an attack near the university's campus last year. The dealer was pistol-whipped and shot during the attack, but Pharms was charged only with robbery.

Prosecutors said DNA evidence and a football glove linked Pharms to the scene.

Pharms' lawyer said he agreed to plead guilty in return for prosecutors not filing an assault charge, which would have carried a longer sentence.
