Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Greetings, LLC-LIST-- We have had a very busy summer here at the LLC, and there are many exciting changes to tell you about, including our new CD duplication program, a new lab on the way, and foreign language keyboards. You can read about the following items in the new Fall Quarter issue of POLYGLOT, which will arrive during the first week of class (you can access POLYGLOT immediately online at: http://depts.washington.edu/llc/main/polyglot/polyglot_2002Oct.pdf): -NEW: CD duplication -NEW: Online ordering system for audio materials -Teaching with Technology: Using digital video to preserve seminars -Teaching with Technology: Producing Basque materials at the LLC -Meet your 2002-3 LLC Staff Associate CD DUPLICATION: The audio for many languages is now being produced and duplicated on CD. Your students can check the LLC's online ordering page (http://haole.language.washington.edu/ordering) to see if their language is listed. (The ordering form will be uploaded before Monday.) If it IS, they should place the order using the online form. Then, they can come to the LLC 24 hours later to pick up their materials. The cost is $4 per CD (remember to add tax). If their audio is not available on CD, they need to come to the LLC to order their materials. Once inside the LLC, they can locate their textbook on the lists on the walls. Then, they fill out a pink slip requesting their audio cassettes and submit it at the LLC. They can return to the LLC 24 hours later to pick up their materials. The cost is $1 per audio cassette (remember to add tax). The LLC accepts cash and checks only. NEW LAB: Yes, we are installing another electronic classroom in Denny 109. We'll keep you posted on our progress. FOREIGN SCRIPT KEYBOARDS: We have acquired keyboards for many world language scripts. They will be available for students to use in our labs at the LLC. We'll publish instructions and a list of script keyboards for you early in the quarter. LAB RESERVATIONS: If you would like to reserve one of our labs to hold a class session, please contact Sherri Huber at shuber@u.washington.edu We have two labs available for reservation at this time: 1. a Mac lab with G4s and a projector screen available (Denny 112) 2. a PC lab with full e-classroom capabilities (Denny 122) LLC-LIST: WHAT IS THIS?!? I'll briefly describe the LLC-LIST forum below. Please inform your colleagues of this online community--We encourage all language coordinators, faculty, and TAs to subscribe to LLC-LIST. It is an efficient way to participate in an ongoing discussion about language instruction and technology. LLC-LIST unites LLC staff with language departments. It is a forum for the community to discuss issues relevant to language instruction and the use of technology in the language classroom. We encourage contributions including your ideas, experiences you've had which could benefit the list community, and questions which may be answered by LLC staff or other list members. We at the LLC will periodically highlight some of the technology we are using or projects that we are developing for language teaching and learning. We will also use this list to announce upcoming events at the LLC, such as informative seminars, special training workshops, and open houses.
