As representatives of graduate and professional students at the University of Washington, our office communicates the needs of these students to the University Administration, the Washington State Legislature, the Seattle City Council, the University Board of Regents, and more. To communicate our concerns to these groups effectively, we need accurate data and statistics, well-researched reports, charts, and memoranda, and persuasively written documents. Examples of special projects for staff assistants in the upcoming year are: 1) Revising and formatting the many publications GPSS distributes, including The Guide. 2) Assisting the GPSS Treasurer in itemizing, identifying, and inventorying all GPSS funded items located in University departments. 3) Writing a report on the results of the annual Departmental Review recently completed. This includes compiling data, drafting the report, and presenting the data. 4) Researching and writing briefs on issues concerning the graduate and professional student body for use by GPSS in lobbying the Washington State Legislature, Seattle City Council, the UW Faculty Senate, and the UW Administration. 5) Maintaining a database and filing system of over 100 University committees and committee representatives. In addition to the projects and duties mentioned above, staff assistants will provide office administrative support such as filing, minute-taking, mailing, word processing, and photocopying. QUALIFICATIONS 1) Must be work study qualified. 2) Be a registered graduate or professional student at the University of Washington. 3) Be able to work well with others and without close supervision. 4) Be able to write persuasively and in a coherent, logical and grammatically correct manner. 5) Possess a working knowledge of Macintosh computers, MS Word, Excel, Quark (for publications), and e-mail. 6) Possess solid analytical and research skills. 7) Be able to type 35 wpm. EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS The GPSS graduate staff assistants will be expected to produce well researched and well written materials that will be presented to Legislators, Regents, University Administrators and Faculty. These positions would directly complement the studies of students in Higher Education Administration, Public Affairs, Law or International Studies. Additionally, students in Communications or any type of graphic arts or design would benefit from work on GPSS publications. This is not an inclusive list. Any student from any department who is work study qualified is encouraged to apply. Few students have the opportunity to influence and participate in University policy-making. At GPSS, we are fortunate to be able to offer such an opportunity. The skills acquired and experience gained will benefit any student interested in public policy, public service or education. ........................................................................
