DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE: Under the direction of the Division Dean, Biological and Health Sciences, provide classroom and laboratory instruction in Biology. Areas of instruction may include Molecular and Cellular Biology, Animal and Plant Biology, and Ecology as well as areas common to the discipline. This instruction should incorporate: (1) teaching strategies for a diverse student population, and (2) contributions to the discipline by diverse ethnic groups and women. Provide leadership and be a resource for students interested in the field of biology. Hold regular office hours as required. Attend scheduled department and division meetings. Participate in college activities and on college committees. Act as liaison between the college and professional and/or educational biological organizations. Perform other duties consistent with faculty responsibilities. Assignment may include evening and/or weekend classes. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, cultural, disabled, and ethnic background of community college students. 2. Master's in any biological science OR Bachelor's in any biological science AND Master's in Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Marine Science OR the equivalent. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Knowledge and ability to teach the concepts of molecular and cellular biology, animal and plant biology, and ecology. 2. Teaching experience in lecture/lab courses in the biological sciences. 3. Knowledge and ability to teach current laboratory techniques and procedures in molecular and cellular biology. 4. Ability to develop innovative teaching and learning strategies in the Biological Sciences, including the use of computer-aided instruction. In addition, successful candidates will demonstrate the following: 1. Teach and effectively communicate with students from culturally diverse backgrounds. 2. Convey a sense of enthusiasm and excitement about the subject matter. 3. Provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate critical thinking skills. 4. Tailor instruction to diverse learning styles and abilities. 5. Use appropriate laboratory equipment. 6. Incorporate non-hazardous materials in laboratory exercises. 7. Include multicultural perspectives and practices in biological applications.
