EDP is a partial distance learning MPH program that helps professionals expand their knowledge base in public health and health services while continuing their careers. The program seeks to help students develop the skills needed to effectively manage current and future health care in public health agencies and programs. EDP can be completed in two years one quarter and is delivered through a combination of independent study and some required attendance on-campus. The program is designed for mid-career public and community health professionals. Students may choose from several pathway options: Community Practice, Health Education, Maternal and Child Health, or a Focused Electives option. Applicants should have at least three years of experience related to public health. The Extended MPH Degree Program is in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine at the University of Washington. The program begins in summer with an onsite commitment for one month during summer for two years, and a two-week period during a third summer, plus four weekend seminars per year for two years. Studies continue independently while off-site. A Certificate in Public Health is also available and the 26-29 credits earned may be transferred into the Extended MPH Degree Program if a certificate student later applies and is admitted as an MPH degree student. Last year, 5 Certificate students applied and 5 were accepted to the MPH Degree. The Certificate in Public Health through the Extended MPH Degree Program at the University of Washington spans a 12-month timeframe and covers topics in biostatistics, epidemiology, local public health practice, health services, and general public health management. The combined onsite and distance learning program provides practical and theoretical knowledge for professionals wishing to enhance their skills in public health for application at federal, state, and local levels. Certificate students take the same courses at the same time as MPH Degree students. The Certificate was developed cooperatively by the EDP and the Northwest Center for Public Health Practice. Students may choose from several pathway options: Community Practice, Health Education, or Maternal and Child Health. Applicants should have at least three years of experience related to public health.
