These monorail workshops are designed to gather detailed community input on: Where would the first phase of a new Seattle Monorail go? What will it look like? And how will it be integrated into the neighborhoods? Although a primary focus of the urban design workshops is to determine how a monorail will work best in the corridor (Ballard to Downtown to West Seattle) outlined as the project's first phase, all Seattleites are welcome to participate. Tom Weeks, Chairman of the Elevated Transportation Company (ETC) again urged Seattleites to "Remember, the Ballard to West Seattle route is only a first step in designing a citywide elevated system." The first workshop, featuring a citywide information briefing will be: Tuesday, October 16 at 6:00 pm in Gould Hall on the University of Washington campus (3949 15th NE) With subsequent workshops: Wednesday, October 17, 6:00 pm at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Ballard (3014 NW 67th Street) Thursday, October 18, 6:00 pm at Town Hall, downtown at 1119 Eighth Avenue Saturday, October 20, 9:30 am in the Brockey Student Center at the south end of South Seattle Community College (6000 16th Avenue S.W.) in West Seattle "We encourage anyone interested in helping us answer the questions, 'What will a new Monorail look like?' and 'Where will it go?' to attend," according to Harold Robertson, Executive Director of the ETC. "These will be hands-on workshops where citizens will interact with ETC board, staff and consultants as we begin the design of a new Seattle Monorail." The Seattle Monorail Project Urban Design Team will present the most promising routes from among the possibilities originally outlined in September. The highly interactive workshops feature small group discussions at tables of 12 to 15 people. Each group will then report from each table. Following the workshops, the urban design team will then modify possible routes, station locations and design options based on the feedback and information from the public. The Urban Design Team and other consultants will spend the rest of October answering the questions asked by the public and furthering their analysis in each of the areas identified above prior to returning to the public for a second series of workshops in November to unveil draft station designs and more detailed routing. Seattle Initiative 53, approved by Seattle voters November 7, 2000 with over 56% of the vote, reestablished the Elevated Transportation Company. The ETC is charged with developing a plan to build and operate an elevated system of transportation (monorail) serving Seattle neighborhoods. The initial plan, due for completion by November 2002 requires a vote of Seattle citizens for implementation. ****************************************************************************** University of Washington Transportation Office Box 355212 1127 N.E.
