Neill's Summerhill, and other experiential artifacts Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello everyone, I'm writing to recommend another book: A.S. Neill's _Summerhill; a radical approach to child rearing_ It is a wonderful and challenging book... he is describing a school which might be what happens if you were to try to make a school along the lines of the being group. Of course, I don't 100% agree with some of what he writes. I guess it is most important to read if you have any interest in children or education, or what an ideal living environment might be. The book is about love. I've been having luck finding books I like to read recently. Another is: _Love in the time of cholera_ by Gabriel Garcia Marquez It is also about love... it is a bit long, but I think the length is necessary because the book spans such a long amount of time (70+ years). I bet Marquez' other books are also good, and maybe also about love... that seems to be his theme, although the other book of his I've read is _Chronicle of a death foretold_ I know a lot of you are in college, so maybe you don't read (or at least don't read anything beyond required for your classes). Maybe at winter break? Of course we might like different things. Also, my mom took me to see _A woman of no importance_ --a play by Oscar Wilde. I found it pretty amazing... Wilde did a good job of playing with me that night, and I experienced a wide range of emotions--not anger--but annoyance, happiness, humor, and I'm not sure what emotion it was, but I was also trying not to cry sometimes. It is a play I could have never hoped to even begin to guess what might happen. He did a good job of developing many distinct (I won't say deep) characters in one evening, and I felt a different way about each one (I guess that is what I mean by distinct). That play, too, is about love. Oh, a while ago I was thinking I should write an email to this list that might provoke some discussion, but I'm not so into that at the moment. I have been looking into libertarian politics recently, and I like a lot of it. I also went visiting some of the people I know at UW recently... on the WEB... they have homepages. It's pretty neat to see what people put up. There seems to a minimalist trend among some of my aquaintances. My page is at http://purl.oclc.org/net/cleath/ and the approximately final draft of my paper "The experience of meaning in life from a psychological perspective" is on there if you want to critique it. I hope your break is going well! And I hope you have a good fall quarter, Oh, I'm no longer looking for ecovillages to live on (at least for now)... I'm working for a temp company at the moment, and currently I'm being paid $12/hr to keep myself busy (that is one reason this is so long) and occasionally answer a phone. I don't know how long that will last though. The previous job I had was helping out on a last minute project, a very different situation. I am trying, however, to get a permanent job related to urban design and planning. I have shaved (in anticipation of important job interviews) and gone shopping for "nice" clothes... Ah, what is happening to me? I do expect I will not shave when the pressure (imagined or real) to look presentable is not so great. My chin has all but vanished--it's quite a different face. I may try to cut my hair a bit differently as well...
