JOB ANNOUNCEMENT POSITION: Natural Heritage Data Management Specialist LOCATION: Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Richmond, Virginia SUMMARY OF POSITION: The mission of the Department of Conservation and Recreation's Division of Natural Heritage (DNH) is the conservation of Virginia's biodiversity through identification, protection, and stewardship. DNH collects and maintains comprehensive information on Virginia's rare and endangered plant and animal species and exemplary natural communities, and uses this information to establish natural area conservation priorities, further the protection of these species, and facilitate wise economic development. As part of DNH's Information Management section, the Data Management Specialists help to compile, organize and interpret this scientific data, maintaining the computerized and manual components of the Biological and Conservation Datasystem (BCD) to ensure efficient access to and reporting of natural heritage information. The Data Management Specialists will focus in particular on data gaps and backlogs, notably data for aquatic resources and for cave invertebrates. This is a part-time (30 hour/week) position. Transcribe natural heritage data, including locations of rare plants, animals and natural communities and descriptions of ecologically significant sites, into standard formats, and map the locations manually on USGS topographic maps and digitally into GIS databases. 2. Incorporate natural heritage inventory, protection, and stewardship data into manual, map and computer files using standardized methodology and quality control. 3. Maintain manual files, including map files, geographic manual files, site files, element files, source files, managed area files, and the library. 4. Assume responsibility for special data management projects as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Demonstrated abilities to organize effectively and conduct accurate, detail-oriented work. 2. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of people and with multiple priorities. 3. Knowledge and experience with using a personal computer in a Windows environment required; experience with database software and/or GIS software such as Arcview preferred. 4. Knowlege and experience using a digitizing tablet and/or on-screen digitizing software to digitize line and polygon data preferred. 5. Knowledge of general principles of conservation biology, geography and landscape ecology. 6. Work experience with natural heritage programs and procedures, especially the Biological and Conservation Datasystem, preferred.7. Bachelor's degree in conservation planning, environmental resources, or biology preferred.
