SAVE THE DATE! July 12, 2000 8:30 am -5:00 pm Washington, D.C. TEACHING AND LEARNING FOR COMMUNITY-BUILDING: NEW ROLES, NEW SKILLS, AND STRONGER PARTNERSHIPS A unique gathering of educators, trainers, practitioners, and students of community-building to advance our shared understanding of how to prepare students, professionals, and residents to be effective community builders. Topics to be addressed include: * Graduate education in community building. How are new masters degree programs and courses in urban planning, public administration, social welfare, public health, and other fields incorporating community building skills, knowledge and approaches? * Community leadership development. How can neighborhood residents be well prepared and supported to lead and participate in comprehensive revitalization initiatives? * The relationship between community building and community-based economic development. What are the similarities and differences between training for community-based economic development and the skills, knowledge, and values needed for comprehensive community-building initiatives? * Maximizing the connection between service learning and neighborhood revitalization. How can college students' service experiences and their related classes, writing, and reflection be effectively linked with, and useful to, community-building initiatives? * Education for active citizenship and social responsibility. What are the connections between community-building efforts and the broader movement to reframe undergraduate education in ways that support active participation in the democratic process? * Enhancing the civic engagement of universities and colleges. What are effective strategies for change in universities, colleges, and community colleges to support and implement community-building curricula and partnerships? The conference will feature * Participatory workshops among leaders and innovators in the field. * Presentation of several new national studies of best practices and challenges in community-focused training and education. * Sharing of curriculum materials and teaching strategies from many universities, colleges, community colleges and training centers. * Planning for an ongoing network of educators, trainers and practitioners.
