Several projects were discussed. The group decided on a few to pursue in the upcoming months. 1. Go forward with making this an official student group; we now have two people interested and willing to be official officers, though we will continue to explore the possibilities of remaining an official group with only one publically known officer (and maybe even none). 2. Plan Pride Week events for the first week in April. Specifically, the group discussed selecting and showing some movies and doing a "Straight Talk" for the campus. We thought we'd do movies two nights (Tue. & Wed. perhaps) and "Straight Talks" two nights (Mon. & Thur.) to try to reach various students. Ideas of movies to show were discussed, but more ideas are welcome. We'd want to show films that would be educational as well as show positive portrayals of lgbt life. Ideas discussed were "The Incredible Adventures of Two Girls in Love," "Go Fish," "The Wedding Banquet," and ?? (I don't remember). The idea would be to try to include films that address lesbian as well as gay issues (we probably wouldn't, this time, try to address bisexual and/or transgender issues--unless anyone knows of some good portrayals, and good discussants). We'd also lead discussions afterwards of these movies. As for the "Straight Talks," we thought we'd try to recruit some folks off campus to come in if we couldn't get enough people on campus to cover the basics (lesbian, gay, bisexual). We also thought about bringing in PFLAG members to talk about their experiences. 3. We also discussed beginning a "Pride's Corner" column in the student newspaper, where we'd address questions that members of the UWT community wanted to ask. We discussed putting up message/question requests and decided on this, even though we know we will have to be prepared for some offensive comments and responses to us. We all decided it wouldn't be anything we hadn't heard before so go for it. 4. Finally, we talked about doing something in conjunction with both Black History Month and Women's History Month, though we realized we might be too late for the (well-planned) Black History Month. But we still wondered about being visible in the Commons with a display of lgbt members of the Black community. 5. Ah, one more thing. We pondered doing something for Valentine's Day; in particular we thought it'd be nice to be able to give out buttons or something that said, "Love Knows No Gender." We thought about starting a collection so we could purchase the buttons. Or perhaps just do an ad campaign. I don't think anyone took the lead on this so if there are any takers out there, that'd be great. Next meeting: February 13, 3:15, Room 712 Perkins. FYI: I have a rescheduled committee meeting to attend so I won't be able to make this meeting.
