Online discussion will take place for ten weeks. WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE: Rehabilitation couselors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, teachers in K-12 and post-secondary education, librarians and educational technologists. COURSE OVERVIEW: This online course surveys the field of adaptive computer technology as it impacts the lives of people with disabilities, including the performance of tasks related to employment, education and recreation. COURSE PREVIEW: For a preview of courses, visit the UW Distance Learning Web page at htpp://weber.u.washington.edu/~distance/ WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: * To understand the benefits of adaptive computer technology * To identify the costs of adaptation and possible funding sources * To understand the federal laws related to disability accommodation * To design a physical environment to accommodate adaptive technology * To identify the technological issues for individuals with disabilities * To explain compensatory strategies using adaptive computer technology * To use the Internet to locate information about course topics and stay current with developments in the field TECHNOLOGY BENEFITS: Electronic discussion list provides a structure for regular online discussion with others interested in the same topic. Students can use a World Wide Web page to access disability- related resources. Anyone who has access to the Internet can participate regardless of disability. INSTRUCTOR: Sheryl Burgstahler, Director, Project DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology), University of Washington; Vice Chair, EASI (Equal Access to Software and Information). COURSE START DATE: February 24, 1998. Students must be registered one week before the start date in order to receive an online survey which will help determine that you can receive the course materials electronically. REGISTRATION OPENS: Six weeks before the course begins. ACADEMIC CREDIT: Participants may earn three (3) academic quarter credits of either REHAB C496 or EDC&I C494. FEE: The course is $78 per credit, plus a $15 nonrefundable registration fee, $20 for a required video, and the cost of the text, ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGIES FOR LEARNING AND WORK ENVIRONMENTS by Joe Lazzaro (about $47). Students who choose to audit pay the same fees, although they are not required to purchase the text and video.
